One naming note before we start: in October 2025, Ledger renamed the app. It is now called Ledger Wallet (formerly Ledger Live). Most people still search for “Ledger Live”, and the way it works has not changed, so this guide uses the familiar name throughout.
What Ledger Live Is (and What It Is Not)
Ledger Live is software made by Ledger SAS, a French company. It runs on your computer or phone and talks to your Ledger device. Think of it as a dashboard: it shows you what you own and lets you prepare actions, but it cannot move funds on its own.
A few things it is not:
- It is not a web wallet. There is no browser version of Ledger Live. You install it as a desktop or mobile app.
- It is not a browser extension. Any “Ledger Live extension” offered for download is a red flag.
- It is not where your keys live. Your private keys stay inside the hardware device.
- It is not made by SatoshiLabs. That company makes Trezor, a different product.
Official Software Location
The only official source for the app is ledger.com. Never download software through third-party repositories, file-sharing services, or search engine advertisements.
How Ledger Live Works
The design splits responsibilities between two parts: the device holds secrets, and the app provides the interface.
Keys stay on the device
Every Ledger device contains a Secure Element chip. Your private keys are generated and stored inside that chip and never leave it. The app on your computer or phone does not hold them, cannot read them and cannot export them. This is the core reason a hardware wallet exists: even if your computer is compromised, the keys are somewhere the malware cannot reach.
The device is protected by a PIN. You can also add an optional passphrase for an extra layer. Your backup is a 24-word recovery phrase (Ledger calls it the Secret Recovery Phrase) that you write on paper during setup.
The app is the interface
Ledger Live handles everything that needs a screen and an internet connection: fetching balances, showing transaction history, building transactions, connecting to third-party services and installing apps on your device. It is convenient, but it has no authority to spend anything.
The signing flow, step by step
Here is what happens when you send crypto:
-
1Enter Transaction ParametersYou enter a recipient address and amount in Ledger Live.
-
2Payload ConstructionThe app builds an unsigned transaction and sends it to your device over USB or Bluetooth.
-
3Clear Signing PresentationThe device shows the transaction details on its own screen. With Clear Signing, those details are presented in readable form rather than raw data.
-
4Physical Verification & ApprovalYou check the address and amount on the device, then approve with the physical buttons or touchscreen.
-
5Hardware SignatureThe Secure Element signs the transaction internally and returns only the mathematical signature.
-
6Network BroadcastLedger Live broadcasts the signed transaction to the blockchain network.
The Golden Principle: Screen is Truth
The device screen is the source of truth. If what the app shows and what the device shows ever differ, always trust the device and immediately reject the transaction.
Main Features of Ledger Live
Ledger Live has grown from a simple balance viewer into a broad toolkit. The main features include:
Portfolio Overview
One view of all your accounts across supported networks, with balances and history.
Send and Receive
When you receive, you verify the address on the device screen, not just in the app.
Broad Asset Support
The app tracks more than 15,000 coins and tokens across dozens of blockchain networks.
Buy, Sell and Swap
These run through third-party providers integrated in the app. Each provider sets its own fees and may require identity verification (KYC).
- Staking. Some assets, such as ETH and SOL, can be staked directly from the app. Rewards are not guaranteed.
- Discover. In-app access to decentralized apps (dApps), so you can use them while signing with your device.
- Clear Signing and Transaction Check. Built-in security tools that show human-readable details of what you are about to sign, helping you spot suspicious requests.
- Genuine Check. Confirms cryptographically that your device is an authentic Ledger manufactured by Ledger SAS.
- My Ledger. The app catalog where you install coin apps onto the device and apply official firmware updates.
- Ledger Recover. An optional, paid subscription for backing up your recovery phrase. It is opt-in; you do not need it to use Ledger Live.
How to Set Up Ledger Live: Step-by-Step
Go slowly here; this is the one part of the process where haste causes real problems. Have a pen and the recovery sheet that came with your device ready.

com.ledger.live). The download is completely free. -
3Install the app on your computerPlatform-specific verification steps:
- Windows: Run the
.exeinstaller. The operating system must display Ledger as the verified publisher. - macOS: Open the
.dmgfile and drag the Ledger app to Applications. - Linux: Make the
.AppImagefile executable (chmod +x). You may need to add udev rules so the system recognizes the device over USB.
- Windows: Run the

4Launch and select your hardware modelOpen the app and select “Get started”. Choose your device model from the list (Nano S Plus, Nano X, Nano Gen5, Flex or Stax).
-
5Pick your setup pathSet up a new device, restore from an existing recovery phrase, or connect a device you already configured.
-
6Set a secure PINChoose a 4 to 8 digit PIN directly on the device itself. Never use obvious patterns like 0000 or 1234.
-
7Write down your 24 words on paperThe device displays them; you copy them onto the sheet. Never photograph them, type them into a computer or phone, or store them in cloud backups.
-
8Confirm the phrase on the deviceFollow the prompts on the physical screen to verify each word in its exact sequential order.
-
9Run the Genuine checkLedger Live cryptographically verifies with Ledger’s secure servers that your device is genuine.
-
10Install coin apps through My LedgerAdd the blockchain apps for the networks you intend to use, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, or Solana.
-
11Add your accountsLedger Live creates accounts for the installed apps so you can track balances and receive assets.

12Perform a small test transactionReceive a small amount first, verifying the address on the device screen, before transferring larger sums.
Ledger Live for Desktop vs Ledger Live for Mobile
Both versions connect to the same device and use the same security model. The differences are mostly about connection type and context.
| Aspect | Ledger Live for Desktop | Ledger Live for Mobile |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | Windows, macOS, Linux | iOS (App Store), Android (Google Play) |
| Connection | USB cable; Bluetooth not needed | Bluetooth (Nano X, Nano Gen5, Flex, Stax) or USB-OTG on Android (Nano S Plus) |
| Device compatibility | All current Ledger devices | Nano S Plus only via Android with OTG; Bluetooth models on iOS and Android |
| Best for | Initial setup, managing many accounts, larger transfers at your desk | Checking balances and quick transactions on the go |
| Feature parity | Core features: portfolio, send/receive, buy/sell/swap, staking, Discover, My Ledger | The same core features; menus and provider availability can vary by platform and region |
| Security notes | Keys stay on the device; download only from ledger.com; Linux may need udev rules | Keys stay on the device; install only from official stores and check the publisher is Ledger |
In short: desktop is the comfortable choice for setup and heavier management, since a cable connection is simple and works with every model. Mobile is ideal for everyday checks and on-the-go sends. Note that a Nano S Plus has no Bluetooth, so on mobile it works only with an Android phone and an OTG cable. Whichever you choose, the security rests on the device: every transaction still needs your physical approval.
Staying Safe with Ledger Live
Most losses involving Ledger users come from scams, not from the device being broken. Watch for these:
-
Fake Ledger Live apps: Promoted through search ads, copycat websites, fake browser extensions and fraudulent listings in app stores.
-
Phishing emails and paper letters: After Ledger’s 2020 customer data leak, some users received messages, and even physical letters, asking them to “verify” their recovery phrase.
-
Fake support: Impostor accounts on Telegram, Discord, or X (Twitter) posing as Ledger staff offering troubleshooting links.
-
Fake firmware pop-ups: Malicious prompts claiming an urgent update needs your 24 words.
The Unbreakable Security Rule
The rule that defeats all of these: never type your recovery phrase into any website, app form, chat or “support” request. Ledger never asks for your 24 words. The only time those words should be entered is directly on a Ledger device during a restore.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Ledger Live free?
Yes. Downloading and using the app is free. You pay network fees when you send crypto, and third-party providers charge their own fees for buying, selling or swapping. Ledger Recover is a separate, optional paid service.
Is there a web version of Ledger Live?
No. Ledger Live is available only as a desktop app (Windows, macOS, Linux) and a mobile app (iOS, Android). A website that claims to be “Ledger Live online” is not legitimate.
Does Ledger Live store my private keys?
No. Your private keys are kept in the Secure Element chip inside your Ledger device. The app only builds transactions and displays information; signing happens on the device.
What happens if I lose my Ledger device?
Your crypto is not stored on the device itself but on the blockchain. With your 24-word recovery phrase you can restore access on a new Ledger device. Keep the phrase safe and offline.
Why do I have to confirm every transaction on the device?
Because the device is the only part of the setup that can sign. Confirming on its screen protects you if your computer or phone has been tampered with, since malware cannot press the device buttons for you.
Do I need Ledger Recover?
No. It is an optional, paid backup subscription. Many people simply keep their paper recovery phrase stored securely. Whether to use it is a personal choice.
Where should I download Ledger Live?
Only from ledger.com, or from the official App Store and Google Play listings published by Ledger. Type the domain yourself and double-check it before downloading. You can also view our Safe Ledger Live Download Guide.
